Let’s be honest, we all like to have people in our corner. Whether it’s starting a business, going for a promotion or trying to lose weight, we all want someone rooting us on. What’s better than the feeling of having throngs of raving fans and well wishers, supporting you and cheering you on? Unfortunately, that’s generally not how it works out, especially when you’re in the early stages of your journey. So what happens when you’re not getting the support you were hoping for? Sometimes, you have to be your own damn cheerleader.
I’m the type of person who tries to treat people the way that I want to be treated. When it comes to supporting friends and family with their goals and endeavors, I try to support them the way I would want someone to support me; If your band is playing a gig, I’m there, if you’re hosting an event, count me in. So when I launched my company back in 2014, I expected the same support I had given to those same friends and family. And when I didn’t get the same level of support I put out, I was shocked and very disappointed. After spending a little time in my feelings, I had to reassess my motives. Was I supporting friends and family because I truly believed in them and wanted to or because I wanted them to “owe me one?” After a little self-evaluation, I came to the conclusion that whether or not anyone else supported me, I had to learn to be my own damn cheerleader. While it’s nice to have people support you, they don’t have to. They don’t owe you anything. It’s your dream, your vision, your goal. If you really want to accomplish whatever it is you’re going after, you have to root for yourself, even when no one else does. Yes, it’s hard, but nothing good ever comes easy.
Olympic Gold Medalist Gabby Douglas has a quote that I absolutely love, “Hard days are the best because that’s when champions are made. If you push through the hard days, then you can get through anything. ” If you can manage the courage and strength to root for yourself and keep going, even when no one else believes in you, there’s nothing you can’t accomplish. Instead of wasting time paying attention to who isn’t cheering you on, cheer for yourself. With success, in time, you’ll have plenty of fans and well wishers. But until that time comes, keep going and be your own damn cheerleader.
