We women are amazing creatures. We’re strong, smart, life givers, master multi-taskers, wives, mothers, sisters, aunts, CEOs, business owners – really, what is it that we can’t do? We really are Superwomen. Because we have so much capacity, sometimes we tend to take on way more than we should, leaving us drained and depleted in the process. This is what is known as Superwoman Syndrome. “Superwoman Syndrome occurs when a woman is constantly striving and stretching herself to accomplish everything possible in a perfect manner and not putting herself as a top priority.”
So Superwoman, while you’re out there kicking ass and taking names, don’t forget to save yourself. In other words, be sure to put yourself at the top of your list. Here are five ways you can kick the Superwoman Syndrome and save yourself:
Put Yourself First:
As the saying goes, you can’t pour from an empty cup. In order for you to help anyone else, first you have to help yourself. That means putting yourself first. When you’re full, you have something to share with others. So what does putting yourself first look like? It means eating right, exercising, getting enough sleep, drinking plenty of water and eliminating unnecessary stress.
Trim The Fat:
Another way to help save yourself is to trim the fat – specifically, eliminating the unnecessary, time and energy draining things from your life. Invited to a networking event that isn’t the best use of your time – graciously decline; invited out to brunch by an acquaintance that just wants to “pick your brain” – graciously decline; receive a phone call from a friend that wants to gossip – kindly cut it short. Eliminating the time draining fluff from your life will free you up for so many more worth while endeavors.
Know When to Unplug and Recharge:
The smart phone is both a blessing and a curse. It allows us to have so many resources, at our fingertips, in one device. And therein lies the problem – we’re connected to work, news, social media and everyone in our contact list, 24/7. In a hyper connected world, it’s important that we take time to unplug from the outside world, in order to recharge. That might mean switching your phone into ‘do not disturb’ mode every now and again or making it a habit not to have it by your bedside.
Do More of What Makes You Happy:
Tell the truth – when was the last time you did something to make yourself happy? One way to help save yourself is to do more of what makes you happy. Take more walks, read more books, drink more wine (responsibly, of course), go camping – whatever makes your heart sing, do more of that.
Lose The Guilt:
When you’re looking to save yourself, inevitably, that feeling of guilt will try to creep in – whether it’s self-imposed or others try to make you feel guilty because you’re not giving them what they want. In either case, lose the guilt. You can’t be everything to everyone, all the time, without losing yourself in the process. Superwoman, ditch the guilt and save yourself.
So Superwoman, what are you doing to save yourself?
