Let’s be honest – none of us can accomplish anything completely on our own. Whether you’re starting a business or trying to climb the corporate ladder, we all need a helping hand to get through this here thing we call life. The hard part, however, can be trying to figure out how to surround yourself with the right people. Live long enough and you figure out that truly good, genuine people are hard to find and once you’ve found them, you better hold on for dear life. Surrounding yourself with the right people can be the difference between you reaching your full potential in life, versus just existing. Here are a few tips on how to surround yourself with the right people.
1. The Right People Bring Out the Best In You
Over the past few years, I’ve made a conscious effort to distance myself from people and things that annoy me. When it comes to people, I’ve developed a simple test – if someone calls me and my reaction to seeing his/her name on my caller id is negative instead of positive, there’s a good chance that person needs to go. The right people don’t put you in a negative mood; in fact, they tend to do the exact opposite – they have the ability to lift your spirits when you’re in a negative mood and help you see the positive even in negative situations.
2. The Right People Are There For You Whether You’re Winning Or Not
One of my favorite songs ever is New Edition’s ‘Can You Stand The Rain.’ If you’ve ever heard it, you know the point of the song is that when the sun is shining and everything is going great, people aren’t hard to find. It’s when times get tough and things aren’t going great that good friends are hard to find. It’s in those tough times that the right people show up and motivate you when you need it most. Starting a business has been, by far, one of the toughest things I’ve ever done. Through it all, my parents have been two of my biggest cheerleaders. Whether it’s helping support my business or just giving me words of encouragement when I’ve needed them the most, my parents have been awesome. The right people have a way of giving you that extra boost to help keep you going, when times are hard.
3. The Right People Tell You The Truth
No one becomes better by being surrounded by yes men. The right people will tell you the truth, even when you don’t want to hear it if, ultimately, it’s for your own good. If you’re handling work politics the wrong way, they’ll tell you; if your business idea isn’t practical, they’ll tell you sooner, rather than later. The right people want the best for you and aren’t afraid to tell you the truth, even if it hurts your feelings in the short-term.
4. The Right People Energize You
We all have those people we just love being around (or at least we should). Those people who, after you’ve spent time with them, you feel like you could take on the world. The right people tend to make you feel better after you’ve spent time in their company; you walk away feeling revived and renewed.
5. The Right People Want To See You Win
The right people aren’t frenemies – people who smile in your face, but secretly want to see you fail. The right people want to see you win. Not only do they want to see you win, they will try to help you win, if they can.
While it’s important to surround yourself with the right people, make sure you’re “the right person” for some one else. Don’t be that person who is always out to take, but never looking to give.
