My tastes are kind of hit or miss when it comes to movies – let’s just say I’m not that person who’s looking to go to the theater every weekend. I really have to love a movie to sit down and devote an hour and a half of my life to watching it. And if I do love a movie, I’ll watch it over and over and over again. There’s one type of movie I can almost always get behind – movies with kick ass heroines. Give me a movie with a woman who’s kicking ass and taking names any day. Much like my Mom, I’ve always hated those movies with women falling and twisting their ankles running away from killers and looking to be saved. Uh, uh, none that for me. Here are five of my absolute favorite kick ass movie heroines of all time:
Mulan was a real turning point for Disney movies. Up until Mulan, all the previous Disney princesses were waiting for prince whomever to come in and save the day. Not Mulan – she defied her father and tradition to save China from some truly grimy villains. You’re welcome Emperor.
Kate Beckinsale as Selene in the Underworld trilogy truly kicked butt – literally. The gun toting, vampire warrior death dealer wasn’t afraid to follow her heart, defy her coven and kill not one, but two head vampires, all but assuring retribution. Pretty bad ass, if you ask me.
I could watch Uma Thurman all day long exacting revenge on those who tried to kill her after she left the assassin fold in an attempt to find a normal life. She had so many names on her kill list she couldn’t fit them all into one movie. Sure, the blood and fighting scenes were over the top, but with Quentin Tarantino directing, it’s kind of expected. And her yellow jump suit was pretty killer too.
Disclaimer: I’m a huge fan of the Christopher Nolan Batman reboot, so I probably would’ve loved Dark Knight Rises anyway. Anne Hathaway as Catwoman, however, was simply the icing on the proverbial cake. Sure, she started out betraying Batman, helping lure him to Bain, but she more than made up for that in the end when she saved Batman’s bacon against that very same mad man. What I loved most about Catwoman was that she was equal parts sass, whit and kick ass fighting moves.
Shailene Woodley as Tris is one of the latest actresses to join the list of those playing the role of bold, fearless heroine. I really enjoyed her character’s evolution throughout the movie – going from a somewhat timid girl to a full on warrior princess by the end, shooting just about anyone who moved. One of my favorite parts of the movie is when she becomes annoyed at everyone’s disbelief that she’d actually shoot them. I’m looking forward to seeing more Tris in the future.
Those are five of my favorite kiss ass movie heroines. Who are yours?
